history

The goddess of victory on the obelisk

The first plans to erect a monument to Karl von Kopal existed as early as 1850 and were supported by a specially founded committee. This monument was to be erected first in Schidrowitz ( Ctidružice ), the birthplace of Kopal. At the request of numerous citizens of Znojmo, the site was finally moved to the livelier Znojmo.

At the request of the committee, the city of Znojmo offered a place in front of the so-called Kaisertor as an installation site and was also prepared to adapt this place accordingly at its own expense.

On February 18, 1852, Matthäus Elsinger, as chairman of the committee, asked Emperor Franz Joseph I again for the first time on November 3 of the same year for the transfer of the cannon metal necessary for casting the figure and some emblems, which was also approved a few days later.

The copal monument was designed by Paul Wilhelm Eduard Sprenger . The goddess of victory, Nike , standing on a metal ball on the tip of the 2 fathoms 1 shoe 2 inches (approx. 4.2 meters) high monument in the form of a slender granite obelisk from the quarry in Studein was designed by Anton Dominik von Fernkorn and from the princely Salm iron foundry Cast from the metal of captured Piedmontese cannons.

The copal monument was unveiled on October 16, 1853.

After the establishment of the Czechoslovak state in 1918, Kopal Square was renamed Komenský Square (Komenského náměstí) . All inscriptions were removed from the copal monument itself, as they were homage to the monarchy .

In 2010, as part of the redesign of the square and the restoration of the monument, the old decorations from hunter equipment (socket with bayonet, horn, hunter's hat and knapsack) of the obelisk were reassembled and the former German inscriptions were embedded in the floor in narrow metal strips in Czech translation.

Kopal Disability Foundation

The rest of the money raised to finance the copal monument was used to fund the Kopal Disability Foundation. The beneficiaries of this foundation were to be three invalids from the Xth Jäger Battalion.

One foundation place was endowed with 120 guilders per year, another with 60 guilders per year and a third with 30 guilders per year. The first-mentioned donor also received from the city of Znojmo an additional 20 guilders and two fathoms of soft beating wood. In return, however, this invalid had to move to Znojmo and guard the complex of the copal monument and keep the copal square clean.
