Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Morcinek

The Morcinek hard coal mine (Polish Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Morcinek ) is a disused hard coal mine in the Kaczyce Górne district of Teschen / Cieszyn , Poland.

history

As early as 1903 to 1906, the German mining and iron and steel works company carried out a test borehole in Cieszyn directly on the border with the Czech Republic , which reached a depth of 1,227 m and demonstrated several seams , but assessed the mining as unprofitable . From 1945, due to the great demand for hard coal, further explorations were carried out to a depth of 1552 meters.

When the demand for the energy source hard coal rose sharply in Poland in the early 1970s, three mines were planned east and south of Jastrzębie-Zdrój, which operated under the common name Suszec-Kaczyce-Pawłowice during their construction . For this composite, the mine emerged in 1963 in Pawłowice under the name XXX years People's Republic of Poland (now Pniówek ), 1975 in Suszec the mine with the current name Krupiński and most recently in 1977 in Kaczyce the mine, which since 1986 in honor of Gustav Morcinek bore his name . During the construction of the last-mentioned colliery, it was problematic that, due to its close proximity to its national territory (approx. 1.6 km), the ČSSR reported concerns about its construction, but the Polish side did not take them into account. Rather, the new mine was granted an entitlement of 22.6 km² near the border.

In the following years three shafts were sunk : "Shaft I" with 1143 m depth was completed in March 1982, "Shaft II" with 1213 m depth in January 1985 and "Weather shaft III" with 1140 m in September 1983. Two more originally planned shafts were never built or completed. The promotion took place on the 800 m and 950 m levels; the 1,100 m level was also never driven .

The mine fell short of expectations right from the start, despite two production levels and modern mining technology. The following table shows how far the actual production results remained from the target of 12,000 t / d. It also shows that at no point between 1987 and 1998 could profits be made.

year Net production in t / d and million t / a Sales price in zł / t Cost in zł / t Sales result in zł / t
1987 1,265 0.3839 0.64 2.17 -1.53

1997 5,444 1.3719 152.79 202.02 -49.23
1998 3,800 0.9653 145.28 197.78 -52.50

For 1996 this meant a total loss of 59.5 million PLN or 106.7 million DM. The following reasons were given for the high production costs:

  • poor exploration of the deposit
  • complicated tectonics with numerous faults
  • short dimensions of the strut (200 to 700 m)
  • varying thickness and inclination of the seams
  • high temperatures underground
  • Hazards from water inflows and strong methane outgassing
  • high mountain pressure

Therefore, the Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa decided in 1997 to shut down the mine. Coal mining was stopped on October 30, 1998, machines and systems were dismantled and transported to other JSW systems and the Bogdanka mine. The shafts were filled and only a few administration buildings were left on the site.

present

The former Czech mining company NRW (New World Resources) reports on its website that it is interested in mining the hard coal reserves of Morcinek . Apart from a letter of intent signed by the Polish and Czech sides in November 2007, nothing has happened in this regard to date (beginning of 2018).
