A halter for dogs is a supplementary guiding device for the house dog , which is also suitable for dogs that are difficult to lead. The name Halti has become established for this aid . It is the most famous brand for such halter. However, there are many similar products available on the market.

origin

The developer of this system, Dr. Mugford from the Animal Behavior Center was inspired by a horse halter . Just like with horses, the posture of the head can be influenced with a dog halter so that the dog's head can be aligned with the leading person. It does not make sense to lead the dog exclusively with the halter, but always in connection with a collar or chain or harness. The handling must be trained. The dog must be slowly accustomed to this using positive reinforcement in order to achieve the desired result.

functionality

Dog with a halter on

The dog halter is ideally not used as the sole attachment point for the leash ; this should be attached to the collar or harness at the other end. This leadership technique is known as dual leadership . As an alternative to using two ends of a longer line, it is also possible to use two lines. The halter directs the dog but does not hold it. This is the main difference to the horse halter.

The dog halter is a belt construction to be able to direct the head of the led dog over a leash. The most important thing is a movable loop that surrounds the mouth. The leading person can, for example, use the halter to interrupt the dog's eye contact with another dog and pull it towards himself by turning the dog's head over the leash. When pulling on the halter, the loop around the mouth is tightened and exerts a pressure that is similar to “reaching over the mouth” of an adult dog to discipline a puppy .

Muzzle alternative

According to the country Dogs Act and its regulations of 2003 for North Rhine-Westphalia , the canine halter is as muzzle spare admitted. It should be noted that a dog halter, unlike a muzzle, does not make bites impossible. Dog halters are therefore not a substitute for muzzles.

The term" muzzle "is not used technically . Instead of a "real" muzzle, another device which has the same effect as preventing biting, e.g. B. a head halter can be used. "
