Head shell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Head shells are a special form of Attic rim shells .

The term head shells was coined by John Boardman and is controversial in research. In contrast to normal rim shells, head shells have women's heads and these are only shown in outline drawings on the shell lip. The painter Epitimos depicts the heads of women as well as the heads of gods in this way. Other head shell painters and potters were Hermogenes , Phrynos , the Epitimos painter and Sakonides .
