Koppenfels (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The von Koppenfels family , originally Kobe von Koppenfels, is a Thuringian-Saxon noble family of the so-called letter nobility , which came from the clothmaker family Kob in Hildburghausen .

Ancestors and relatives of the Kob family had been guild masters and council members of the city of Hildburghausen since the 16th century and even provided the mayor there through the cloth maker Lorenz Kob († December 14, 1672 in Hildburghausen), the grandfather of Johann Sebastian Kobe von Koppenfels .

The family was raised to the hereditary imperial nobility with the addition of Koppenfels by the German Emperor Franz I on April 26, 1754 with the court and consistorial council as well as the real secret council in the duchy of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld , Johann Sebastian Kob (1699-1765) . In 1760 he appears for the first time as Kobe von Koppenfels as an author with this name. His grandson Ludwig Heinrich Kobe von Koppenfels (1780–1861), royal Saxon court and judiciary, received on January 1, 1810 the promotion to the baron status .

Many male family members embarked on military careers, and several others became lawyers . In both professions, the Koppenfels were able to achieve high offices and positions in the Kingdom of Saxony and in the Thuringian duchies. The von Koppenfels family also shaped the history of Dresden for over 150 years .
