The Coptic Church of Saint Mark is the building of the first Coptic congregation , which was built and founded in the Cairin district of Heliopolis in Egypt . As one of several Coptic Orthodox churches, the St. Mark's Church is located near the Cleopatra Hospital on Cleopatra Street of the same name.

history

The idea of ​​building a church in Heliopolis dates back to 1917. A committee was founded especially for this purpose, and finally the first cornerstone was laid on Friday, June 16, 1922 under the reign-like administration of Pope Kirellos V. The first prayers began as early as January 1925 and were held in a temporary location until 1930. This year the construction was finally completed. The future Br. Ibrahim Luke served as the first priest and stayed in St. Mark's Church until his death in 1950. Today there are at least ten priests who work for St. Mark's Church alone.

Some of the land now attached was purchased in 1948 to build the church's hall and chapel. It was on June 5, 1964 by Pope Kirellos VI. inaugurated. A new altar called “ Saint Menas ” was also inaugurated.

Pope visits

Since the Church of Saint Mark has a long history, there have been several cases where papal visits have been made by various Coptic popes . Among these are:

  • Pope Joseph II : laid the cornerstone of the church hall.
  • Pope Kirellos VI. : for a prayer in 1960 and 1964 for the opening of the church hall.
  • Pope Schenuda III. : visited her several times; 1973 and 1981 for prayers, and a more recent visit in 2000 when the 50th anniversary of Br. Ibrahim Luke was commemorated.
