The Korea Association e. V. (own spelling Korea Verband , Korean: 코리아 협의회 ) is a non-profit association for Korea . The Korea Association was founded in Bochum in 1990 and is now based in Berlin.
aims
The work of the Korea-Verband e. V. includes public relations and educational work, which contributes to deepening knowledge and critical reflection on Korea.
According to the statutes, the association pursues the following goals:
- to promote German - Korean encounters
- to inform about the conditions and developments on the Korean peninsula, especially in the areas of politics and society
- to promote the German-Korean dialogue
- to support the efforts of the Korean people for peace and reunification
- to contribute to the observance and enforcement of human rights
- to present the consequences and effects of migration in different contexts
- Promote culture, research and science on Korea
The Korea Association has independent work areas to implement its goals. The working group “comfort women” of the Korea Association publicizes the problem of comfort women in Germany through educational and public relations work as well as through political campaigns . The Korea Communication and Research Center of the Korea Association has published the Korea Forum magazine since 1991, which reports on political, social, economic and cultural topics, events and publications on Korea.
history
In 1981 the Korea Committee, a predecessor of the Korea Association, established the Korea Coordination Conference. The Korea Coordination Conference was an informal union of Korean self-organizations, as well as German development, humanitarian and church groups. The member organizations did solidarity work with North and South Korea in Germany.
For the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the Korea Coordination Conference initiated an Olympic campaign against the Olympics. A Korea Information Office was set up for this purpose. The positive experiences from the work against the Olympics prompted the member organizations of the Korea Coordination Conference to further professionalize. A permanently manned Korea office should therefore be set up for more efficient Korea solidarity work. The founding of the Korea Association on November 18, 1990 in Bochum and the transfer of the Korea information office for the Olympic campaign to the Korea Communication and Research Center of the Korea Association served this purpose. The Korea Committee was then dissolved and the Korea Coordination Conference continued to be convened by the Korea Association.
In 1995 the Korea Association founded the Asia House together with the Asia Foundation, the Philippines Office and the Southeast Asia Information Center and from then on worked together with the other founding organizations from Essen. The Asia Foundation and the Asia House were later transferred to the Asia House Foundation . The Korea Association is a founding member of the Asia House Foundation.
In 2007 the Korea Association relocated to Berlin, the current location of the association.
