Koreyoshi Kurahara

Koreyoshi Kurahara ( Japanese 蔵 原 惟 繕 , Kurahara Koreyoshi ; born May 31, 1927 in Kuching , Sarawak , Malaysia ; † December 28, 2002 in Yokohama , Japan ) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter.

Kurahare graduated from Nihon University's Faculty of Arts . From 1952 he was assistant director of the Shochiku Kyoto Studio . In 1957 he made his debut as a director with the film Ore wa matteru ze (I am waiting). With Aru kyōhaku ( intimidation ) he created the first Japanese film noir in 1960 . Films like Kyōnetsu no kisetsu (The Warped Ones, 1960), Nikui an-chikushō (I hate but love, 1962), Kuroi taiyō (Black Sun, 1964) and Ai no kawaki (Thirst for Love, 1966) followed. Later successes were Nankyoku monogatari (Antarctic, 1983) Haru no kane (1985) and - in collaboration with Roger Spottiswoode - Hiroshima (1995).

Kurahara also made two documentaries ( Der Gletscherfuchs , 1978 and Zou monogatari , 1980) and participated in several television series. He also wrote the script for several of his films (including Antarctica ). His uncle was the literary critic Korehito Kurahara , his brother Koretsugu Kurahara became known as a director right away .
