Gerhard Ramspeck

Gerhard Jacob Ramspeck (born June 25, 1793 in Alsfeld ; † December 24, 1880 ibid) was a Hessian businessman and politician and a member of the 2nd Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and long-time mayor of Alsfeld.

Gerhard Ramspeck was the son of the master draper, businessman and church elder Johann Werner Ramspeck (1764-1846) and his wife Sibylla Katharine, née Hartmann (1763-1818). The family originally came from Basel . Hans Jakob Ramspeck received citizenship in Alsfeld on May 5, 1679.

Ramspeck, who was a Protestant, was a merchant in Alsfeld and married Susanne Juliane nee Hartmann (1792–1874) there in 1813 . Their son Werner Ramspeck also became a member of the state parliament and mayor. The couple also had 5 other children.

Ramspeck served as a lieutenant in the Landwehr from 1816 to 1819. He was first elected as an alderman in 1822. Ramspeck was head of the local court in Alsfeld from 1825. From 1825 to 1871 he was mayor of the city.

During his tenure as mayor, the district council seat was relocated from Romrod to Alsfeld in 1829 and the Alsfeld district was formed in 1832. Other changes included the enlargement and beautification of the cemetery on Frauenberg (1839-1844), the introduction of street lighting from 1842 and the restoration of the Luther tower in the same year, the renovation of the Holy Trinity Church in 1852, the introduction of the Alsfeld night watch in 1862, the extension of the residential buildings beyond the city wall, the construction of the telegraph line in 1868 and the connection of Alsfeld to the Upper Hessian railway in 1870.

From 1841 to 1849 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates. He was elected for the constituency of the city of Alsfeld . In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .
