Wilhelm Schmitt (politician)

Wilhelm Schmitt (born May 22, 1810 in Gießen ; † after 1855) was a Hessian businessman and politician and a member of the 2nd Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Wilhelm Schmitt was the son of the rent master Friedrich Ludwig Schmitt and his wife Louise Adolphine, née Emdbt.

After attending the Gießen high school, Schmitt, who was of Protestant faith, studied camera sciences in Gießen from 1828 . During his studies in 1828 he became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania . After giving up his studies, he worked as a clerk in Altenburg near Alsfeld. He was accused of having participated in revolutionary meetings in Giessen and of having been involved in the plot to assassinate Frankfurt in 1833, which is why he was sentenced to eight years in prison on November 5, 1838 by the Giessen court ; on January 7, 1839 he was pardoned.

He then worked again as a clerk in Altenburg near Alsfeld and later as a businessman in Frankfurt am Main. From 1851 to 1856 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates. He was elected for the constituency of the city of Alsfeld . He was also a member of the Alsfeld local council.
