Granary at the port of Wolgast
The granary at the harbor , often referred to as a half-timbered store or warehouse for short , was a historic half-timbered building in Wolgast in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district , which was one of the city's landmarks. Until it was destroyed by a fire in 2006, it was considered the largest half-timbered storage facility in northern Germany.
The Wolgast grain wholesaler August Wilhelm Homeyer had the granary built with a sun kiln in 1835 and 1836. For what was then the most modern half-timbered storage facility in the Baltic Sea region, a pile foundation made of 99 oak piles was built in the swampy terrain . The three- story timber-framed building with brick infills was 80 meters long and 18 meters wide. In the middle of the eaves side facing the city was a two-storey roof bay window with a protruding saddle roof with a load winch. The gables had similar projecting roof elevators. There were three pike dormers on top of each other on both sides of the roof . The hatches of the 39- axis building were all closed with wooden doors. Inside, six bulk floors held a total of 5000 tons of grain.
The granary was used until after the political change in the GDR . Most recently it was privately owned. In the night of June 6th to 7th, 2006 the granary burned down except for the south gable, which was massively renovated in 1900. The damage was estimated at 1 to 1.5 million euros. The arsonist, himself a member of the fire brigade, was caught during the extinguishing work and sentenced to several years in prison. A rebuilding of the memory is considered unlikely. In the meantime, the remains have been completely torn down and the site leveled.
