The Corsican pony ( Corsican: cavallu corsu or paganacce ) is a small riding horse native to the island of Corsica . The immigration of the breed to the island took place in several phases and is largely due to humans. By adapting to its mountainous habitat, the Corsican Pony was a high surefootedness acquire. In the past centuries, the small, skillful horse was ridden, harnessed and used for various tasks by the locals. It was also Napoleon I's preferred mount , and its qualities were later highlighted in several travelogues.

The mechanization of agriculture and transportation almost completely displaced the Corsican pony. However, at the end of the 20th century, a number of conservation initiatives were launched. Thanks to the organization u Cavallu Corsu and on the basis of eight stallions , it was finally officially recognized as a breed in France in 2012 .

The pony is of reduced size, its shape looks harmonious and compact, with its back being a bit short. The fur is brown , black-brown or black in color. The pony is adapted to all possible forms of recreational riding, with tourism being the main motive for maintaining its rearing. It is also ridden in polo , used for working equitation or endurance riding , and it is occasionally found in riding stables . In mid-2011 a total of 180 representatives of the breed were counted. The Corsican pony is inextricably linked with the cultural identity of its home island.
