Kosmos 2455 is the name of a military reconnaissance satellite of the Lotos series from Russia .

It was launched on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 10:44 UTC with a Soyuz U launcher from ramp number 2 of Launch Complex 16 of the Russian Plesetsk space base . The rocket deposited the satellite ( COSPAR designation 2009-063A) on an unusual orbit with a lowest orbit point of only 195 kilometers, a highest orbit point of 900 kilometers and an orbit inclination of 67.2 ° to the equator. After changing its orbit on November 23, 2009, the satellite moved on an orbit with a perigee of 890 km and an apogee of 905 km.

The Russian military did not provide any further information about the satellite, but its military use was disclosed. The spacecraft is probably the first copy of a new type of electronic reconnaissance satellite called "Lotos S" ( GRAU index 14F138), which was jointly produced by ZKB Progress in Samara ( satellite bus ) and PLC Arsenal in St. Petersburg (payload) becomes. These are to replace both the Tselina-2 -class reconnaissance satellites and the Pion-NKS / US-PM / US-PU / Legenda. They are based on the Jantar reconnaissance satellite and are intended to form a new reconnaissance network called "Liana". As a secondary payload , Lotos-S is likely to have a scientific payload on board, namely a detector for cosmic rays called "nuclone".
