Kossuth Prize

The Kossuth Prize ( Hungarian Kossuth-díj ) is the highest state award in Hungary for the fields of art and culture. It is named after the Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth .

history

The award was launched by the Hungarian Parliament on March 15, 1948, the 100th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution 1848/1849 , and has been awarded by the Hungarian President ever since.

The prize was originally awarded for achievements in the fields of science , art and literature . People and groups who had outstanding economic production performance in the socialist economic system also received the award.

Since 1963 the prize has only been awarded for the areas of art and culture .
