He is widely considered to be the founder of the modernviewed Ossetian literature. He was also considered a talented painter.

biography

Chetagurow was born in the mountain village of Nar in what is now North Ossetia-Alania . His father was Levan Elisbarowitsch Chetagurow. His mother Maria Gavrilovna Gubayeva died shortly after his birth. He attended the Stavropol high school from 1871 to 1881 and began studying at the Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1881, but had to give up his studies in 1885 for financial reasons. When he returned to Ossetia, he became a well-known poet, whose Ossetian-language poems were soon disseminated orally in Ossetia. He also published poems, stories and articles in Russian-language newspapers Severny Kawkas (edited by him from 1893 to 1902) and Kazbek . His paintings also gained great popularity. One depicted St. Nino , a Georgian saint of the 4th century and was highly valued in Georgia .

Because of his criticism of the imperial Russian government, he was banished twice (1891 to 1896 and 1899 to 1902). He got tuberculosis. The last exile severely affected his health and prevented him from pursuing his artistic and social work. In 1905 he moved to his sister in Georgievko-Ossetinskoje (today Selo imeni Kosta Chetagurowa , Ossetian Labæ in Karachay-Cherkessia ), where he died shortly afterwards in 1906.
