Kouros in the garden of Flerio

The Kouros of Flerio is a 4.7 meter tall statue ( kouros ) made of white Naxos marble , located in a village garden of Melanes , a small village on Naxos , one of the Cycladic islands in Greece. Besides this kouros there is another one in a quarry near Melanes. Their weights should be between 5 and 7 tons. The largest kouros on Naxos with 10.45 meters is the kouros of Apollonas with about 80 tons.

description

The Kouros statues are in most cases the representation of naked youths who have put their arms on the sides of their bodies. The kouroi originated in the archaic period of the 7th to 6th centuries BC. The Kouroi are the male counterparts to female figures, the Koren .

Both kouroi at Flerio are unfinished and are made of Naxos marble. They were not used because the feet broke off in transit.

The Kouros statue by Flerio lies in the shade of a rural garden. The figure is unfinished and roughly worked in advance with pointed chisels by the ancient stonemasons . This can be recognized by the punctiform depressions that are distributed over the entire statue. The outlines of the figure are roughly recognizable. The arms are laid out and a large piece of marble, which is loosely attached, has broken off in the leg area. The feet on the plastic are completely missing, it can be assumed that they have broken off and that this artifact could not be used.

The kouros in the quarry, also called the kouros of Potamia , is halfway up a 300 meter high marble hill and is 5.0 meters high. The statue is also unfinished and its legs are broken off as it probably slipped while being transported in the quarry and remained there. The figure lies on its back, so it was separated from the rock from which it was cut.

Since the marble piece has pronounced bearings, material defects are also clearly visible. The face is peeled off and missing; on the stumps of the feet, there are also clear shells that are not yet connected to the figure. Next to the lying kouros there are roughly carved feet of the figure, which are attached to a recently made concrete foundation.
