Antique water pipe

In ancient times, an 11 km long aqueduct was built from the water-rich area of Flerio to supply the city of Naxos. It was from the 6th century BC. In operation until the 8th century AD and has been rebuilt twice. Even in the earliest construction phase, it was necessary to tunnel through a mountain to the north of the headwaters. The 230 m long tunnel may also have been used to collect additional amounts of water from the area around Kinidaros. The first reconstruction in Roman times kept the original route more or less, a stone canal replaced the ancient clay pipes. In the 4th century AD, clay tubes were used again, similar to the first construction. The aqueduct follows the boundary line between lower-lying agricultural areas and the barren higher-lying areas, in order to enable the irrigation of crops along the route via distribution tanks.

Kalamitsia Jesuit Monastery

The ruins of the Jesuit monastery south of Melanes near Kalamitsia is a mixture of local and western architecture. In addition to the palatial two-storey main building, it consists of a chapel, auxiliary buildings such as a pigeon house, stables and kitchens. There were also tree plantings in the terraced garden with retaining walls, stairs and cisterns. The wider area is used for olive planting. The construction of the complex was probably started between 1679 and 1681 under the abbot Roberto Sauger. The entire facility is in a poor state of preservation due to a lack of repair, looting and use for animal husbandry.
