Herbal cigarette

Herbal cigarettes are tobacco-free and nicotine-free cigarettes that are intended to contribute to smoking cessation .

In addition to the physical dependence on nicotine , almost all smokers are also psychologically dependent on their drug (everyday habits, group ties). A temporary switch to nicotine-free cigarettes can support cessation insofar as all smoking rituals can be maintained until the physical dependence has been reduced or overcome.

In issue 38/1974 of the magazine Der Spiegel there was an article for the first time about the introduction of herbal cigarettes in the Federal Republic under the title "The dream of harmless enjoyment" by the company British American Tobacco (BAT).

In 1980 the English author Juliette de Bairacli Levy, who specializes in medicinal herbs, published the book “Better smoking without tobacco” on the same subject, which is no longer available today.

In 2004, the author Christine Engelbrecht described a new psychological approach to smoking cessation based on herbal cigarettes under the title "Living without nicotine - the herbal cigarette method". Despite stricter laws against all forms of smoking, this was able to establish itself permanently and generally assert itself as an alternative method.

Nicotine-free cigarettes are also used in the theater , for example when a non-smoking actor mimics a smoker.

When burned, pollutants such as tar are produced. Smoking herbal cigarettes is therefore not "healthy" smoking. Herbal cigarettes can only help you quit smoking. In addition, tobacco addiction can be avoided from the outset.

In Germany Weber & Weber sold the herbal cigarette brand NTB Kräuterretten from the French company Arkopharma . NTB stands for NoTaBacco , the NTB herbal rescues consisted exclusively of the plants papaya , eucalyptus , hazelnut and peppermint . The NTB herbal mixture contained no nicotine, but a minimal tar content. This eliminated the physical dependency that is otherwise caused by smoking conventional tobacco cigarettes. According to ISO, the smoke from an NTB herb rescue contained: Ø 0.0 mg nicotine, 3.0 mg condensate (tar) and 3.0 mg carbon monoxide. Despite the not contained tobacco herbal cigarettes are subject to in Germany tobacco tax , as it is tobacco products are.

In Germany, NTB Kräuterretten was only available in pharmacies. The distribution was stopped.

Due to the growing popularity of the method, various other brands have replaced it, such as Honeyrose, Old Farmers, Magic 0, Nirdosh, Hamiltons (as of 2018).

Studies

Since 2016, for the first time, numerous independent studies have been carried out in various universities in the USA to scientifically investigate the benefits of nicotine-free cigarettes and cigarettes with extremely low nicotine content in smoking cessation:

  • Evaluation of Very Low Nicotine Content Cigarettes in Adolescent Smokers. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02587312 by Brown University and National Cancer Institute (NCI)
