The LSD Ornith is a two-seater glider . The LSD Ornith (D for two-seater) is a rather privately developed glider with high performance. It was designed by Wolf Lemke and built together with Karl Pummer in 1969/1970. The first flight took place on May 8, 1971, a few weeks before the Braunschweiger SB 10 . It was thus the first two-seater in plastic construction.
As far as possible, parts from the single-seater production of the LS1 were used. It was later converted to the stern of an LS3 with a damped horizontal stabilizer. The fuselage was taken over from the LS1 almost unchanged. As a result, the cockpit is very tight. The rear seat pedals are almost level with the front control stick. The hood is in two parts and goes back approximately to the height of the spar. The hull has a fixed wheel and a small skid. The very large rudder is striking. The wings were lengthened by about 1.50 m at the roots. This results in a span of 18 meters. The negative sweep of the wings is two degrees. Schempp-Hirth airbrakes on the upper side of the wing serve as a landing aid. The two-seater has two separate clutches for winch launch and towing and does not have any special aeronautical requirements. The low preparation mass of the LSD of 287 kg is remarkable.
In Samedan / Switzerland and in South Africa several record flights were achieved with the LSD Ornith.
The LSD Ornith remained a one-off. Today it is in the glider museum on the Wasserkuppe .
