Mersawa or Krabak is the trade name of a number of wood species of the hardwood genus Anisoptera within the wing fruit family (Dipterocarpaceae) from Southeast Asia. The jointly marketed Mersawa range from Malaysia mainly consists of the species Anisoptera costata , A. laevis , A. scaphula , A. curtisii and A. marginata . Thai krabak mainly refers to A. curtisii , A. oblonga and A. scaphula . The latter is also marketed in Burma as Kaunghmu , while the wood of A. thurifera from the Philippines is marketed as Palosapis .

meaning

Mersawa and other Anisoptera ranges represent a large part of the hardwood range from Southeast Asia, which is marketed as tropical wood in Europe and North America . Eight of the ten species in this genus are now listed on the IUCN Red List , four of which are listed as endangered and 4 as critically endangered, with the main threat being the decline in rainforest areas .

description

The trees of the genus Anisoptera differ in their height and growth, but usually reach an average height of 45 meters with a trunk diameter of one to 1.5 meters. The sapwood and heartwood differ only slightly in their color. The basic color of the heartwood varies from pale yellow to yellowish-brown and can have light pink tones. The sapwood often turns blue due to the frequent infestation with blue fungus . The wood structure is even and coarse-pored, the grain is inconspicuously spotted with silver and the grain is straight to alternately twisted.

With about 640 kg / m 3 in the dry state, the wood has a medium density. The impact resistance , the rigidity and the flexural rigidity are comparatively low, the compressive strength is moderate and the deformability is very high. The processability suffers from the high content of silicates and the alternating twist, which lead to rapid wear of the tool cutting edges. The surface can be brought to a high quality by sanding and polishing, and the wood is easy to nail and glue. The wood is only moderately durable against the weather and pests, but it can be treated with wood preservatives .

use

Mersawa is mainly used as wood for furniture construction, as construction timber and for interior fittings, for example for floor coverings. It is also used as plank wood in bodywork and boat building . For plywood veneers it is peeled, and for face veneers it is sliced.
