The Arnot power plant is a coal-fired power plant owned by the South African state energy supplier Eskom with an installed capacity of 2.1 GW in the Mpumalanga province . The coal for the power station is primarily extracted from the neighboring Arnot coal mine .
The power plant consists of six blocks of 350 MW each. Between 1992 and 1997, three units were temporarily shut down due to an oversupply of electrical energy in the region. As a result of the Mozal aluminum smelter, which went into operation in 1997, and the energy-intensive smelting flux electrolysis used to extract aluminum , the demand for electricity increased. The energy requirements for the Mozal aluminum smelter are primarily met by the Arnot power plant. Electricity is fed into the South African high-voltage network at the 400 kV level.
