The Cerro Prieto power plant is a geothermal power plant in Baja California , Mexico . It consists of a total of four systems. The installed capacity of the power plant is 570 MW . The city of Mexicali is approximately 15 km northwest.
The power plant is owned by the CFE and operated by CFE.
Cerro Prieto I
The Cerro Prieto I power plant consists of five blocks with a total installed capacity of 180 MW; the plant went into operation from 1973 to 1985. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 37.5 | 1973 | Toshiba | Toshiba | shut down |
2 | 37.5 | 1973 | Toshiba | Toshiba | shut down |
3 | 37.5 | 1976 | Toshiba | Toshiba | shut down |
4th | 37.5 | 1976 | Toshiba | Toshiba | shut down |
5 | 30th | 1985 | Toshiba | Toshiba | in operation |
In 2011, Units 1 and 2 were shut down as the wells produced less and less steam; In 2012, units 3 and 4 had to be shut down for the same reason.
Cerro Prieto II
The Cerro Prieto II power plant consists of two blocks with a total installed capacity of 220 MW; the plant went into operation in 1984. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 110 | 1984 | Toshiba | in operation | |
2 | 110 | 1984 | Toshiba | in operation |
Cerro Prieto III
The Cerro Prieto III power plant consists of two blocks with a total installed capacity of 220 MW; the plant went into operation from 1985 to 1986. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 110 | 1985 | Toshiba | in operation | |
2 | 110 | 1986 | Toshiba | in operation |
Cerro Prieto IV
The Cerro Prieto IV power plant consists of four blocks with a total installed capacity of 100 MW; the plant went into operation in 2000. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 25th | 2000 | Mitsubishi | in operation | |
2 | 25th | 2000 | Mitsubishi | in operation | |
3 | 25th | 2000 | Mitsubishi | in operation | |
4th | 25th | 2000 | Mitsubishi | in operation |
In 2002, Cerro Prieto IV generated 862.615 million kWh .
Cerro Prieto V
There were plans to build another power plant, Cerro Prieto V, with a total installed capacity of 100 MW; however, due to the drop in steam pressure in the existing boreholes, these plans were abandoned.
Others
In 2012, an experimental solar system with 5 MW was installed on the site to research various photovoltaic technologies.
