The plant is located in the Mpumalanga province about 40 km south of Middelburg . It consists of ten 200 MW units that went into operation between 1970 and 1976. In the longest turbine hall of all Eskom power plants upon completion, there are ten longitudinally arranged two-casing turbine sets from Kraftwerk Union . The power plant has two 155 m high chimneys and is  cooled by seven 116 m high  wet cooling towers .

Between 1995 and 1997, units 6 to 10 were overhauled and equipped with a common control room , the remaining units followed in the years 2000 to 2003. The Hendrina power plant is one of the oldest plants in South Africa and is in continuous operation.
