The Kendal power plant in South Africa is currently the most powerful coal-fired power plant in South Africa. It is located approximately 40 kilometers southwest of eMalahleni in Mpumalanga Province .
It was built from 1982 by Eskom , the largest electricity supplier in South Africa. The last block went into operation in 1993.
The power plant comprises six units with an installed capacity of 686 MW each , and a total of 4116 megawatts of installed capacity. In 2001, 3840 megawatts of this were used as output. The average availability over the last three years was 93.69%, the average annual electricity production was 24,691 gigawatt hours . It produces 24.3 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.
The power plant is the largest facility in the world that uses cooling towers with indirect dry cooling . The cooling towers have a diameter of 165 m at the base and are also 165 m high.
