The Knapsack power plant is located in the eponymous chemical park in the Knapsack district of Hürth in North Rhine-Westphalia and is operated by the Norwegian energy company Statkraft . The natural gas-fired system consists of two independent blocks that use natural gas as fuel in a combined cycle process with high efficiency (approx. 60%).

history

In 2001, the first plans to build a new power plant at the site were presented by the American power plant operator InterGen . As an investor in the combined cycle power plant under construction, InterGen signed a network usage agreement with RWE and looked for a buyer for further implementation, whom it found in 2005 in the Norwegian energy company Statkraft . This officially started the construction of the power plant on June 30, 2005, the foundation stone was laid a few months later on November 22. On October 17, 2007, the first unit of the power plant went into operation.

In 2010, unit 1 generated over 3.5 TWh of electricity in approx. 4000 operating hours; in 2012, due to changed economic framework conditions, the system generated just 1 TWh (1000 operating hours) and thus generated losses in the millions.

With the commissioning of the second block in June 2013, the capacity of the power plant was expanded by 430 MW. The block, which cost around € 350 million, was initially not started up, however, as low electricity prices on the exchange and high gas prices made it impossible to operate economically.

In 2015, due to ongoing losses, even dismantling the power plant was considered, as in 2014 only 110 full load hours could be achieved. In 2016 (2.04 TWh) and 2017 (2.03 TWh) the generation was enough to cover the operating costs.

Data of the power plant units

The Knapsack power plant consists of two blocks.

Block 2 has a Siemens - gas turbine type SGT5-4000F and a steam turbine of the type SST5-3000 and is designed as a single shaft.
