The Longview power plant is a coal-fired power plant near Maidsville in the US state of West Virginia with an installed capacity of 700  MW (net) and 769 MW (gross).

The power plant, built by Siemens Power Generation and Aker Kværner from 2007 to 2011 , was the first new coal-fired power plant to be built in the northeastern United States in 20 years. It was also the first supercritical, pulverized coal - fired power plant with a FW-BENSON boiler . The sulfur dioxide emissions are minimized by the flue gas scrubber and the nitrogen oxide emissions by the SCR .

The innovative once-through boiler with vertically standing corrugated tubes was supplied by Foster Wheeler . These are more efficient, but have to contend with flow instabilities compared to horizontal ones. The boiler delivers supercritical steam at 569 ° C at 265 bar.

The Longview power plant is fired with local hard coal from Mepco , which is brought to the coal bunker on a 7.2 km long belt conveyor . In 2016, up to 20% natural gas , which is very cheap in the USA, was also contributed. In order to have enough gas even in winter, the world's largest mobile LNG system was installed at the power plant .

Remodeling due to defects

After completion at the end of 2011, the power plant had to struggle with major problems, mainly due to the T23 type boiler steel used. In 2013, the project company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

In 2016, after the replacement of certain flue pipes with T22 with Inconel coating, the introduction of a combustion air measurement system and a new control system from Emerson Electric and a new construction of the incorrectly designed flue gas cleaning system, the power plant was finally put into operation. The additional measures cost US $ 120 million .
