The Maó power plant ( Central Tèrmica de Maó in Catalan , Central Térmica de Mahón in Spanish ) is a gas turbine power plant on the Balearic island of Menorca .

description

The power plant was put into operation in 1993. It is located in the port area of the capital Maó . The first two gas turbines with 37.5 and 38.5 MW were built in 1993 and 1999, they are operated with heavy fuel oil. After that, the plant was expanded with diesel-powered groups with 15.8 MW each. The total installed capacity of the six groups is now 123.4 megawatts.

Since the system is sufficiently dimensioned for the population of around 95,000, not all turbines are always in operation. The system is operated in conjunction with the Es Milà wind power plant and the Son Salomó solar power plant , and the turbines are switched on depending on consumption. The advantages of this gas turbine power plant are the black start capability and the quick start-up within a few minutes. The tank systems are connected to the ship's berth by a pipeline system. The power plant is also connected to the substation in Alcúdia on the island of Mallorca with a 132 kV submarine cable .

The operator is the Spanish energy company GESA- Endesa .
