As crane locomotives is referred to locomotives , usually shunting - or small locomotives , with a crane equipped.

In the first half of the 20th century, some steam locomotives were built that were also equipped with a steam-powered slewing crane . These crane locomotives usually had a radius of five to seven meters, a load capacity of 4 to 26 tons and were used for the recovery of railroad cars that had crashed or for construction work.
