Kreenholm ( German  Krähnholm or Kränholm also , Swedish Krenholm , Crow Island ) is an Estonian river island of Narva in the same city .

The island is around 750 m long and 250 m wide and covers an area of 13 hectares. It divides the Narva waterfall into a western and an eastern arm. The Estonian- Russian border runs through the eastern arm .

A sawmill was operated on Kreenholm as early as the 14th century . In 1538 the Livonian Order built a watermill on the left bank of the river at the level of the island. The merchant Paul Momma had a fabric factory built on the right bank of the river in 1823. Baron Stieglitz 's flax mill was also located there .

From the 17th century onwards, the island belonged to the Joala estate ( Estonian Joala mõis ). Various owners used the current at the waterfalls to operate sawmills. In 1856, Ludwig Knoop from Bremen bought the entire island and began to build a cotton mill on it, which later became the Kreenholmi Manufaktuur textile factory .

Ludwig Knoop named a villa that still exists in the Bremen district of St. Magnus after the island . A road and a wooded area in this part of the village are also named after Krähnholm.
