The church was built between 1734 and 1739, the towers on the southwest side were built between 1854 and 1856 in place of the Dominican monastery that was demolished in 1545.

The church was built on behalf of the local Jesuit order, which has been based in 1677, based on a design by Josef Frisch. It was intended as a college church on the planned but not built Jesuit college, was solemnly consecrated in 1746 and elevated to a parish church in 1819.

The church was entered on February 29, 1949 under no. 56 and on January 10, 1994 under no. 705/64 in the register of architectural monuments of the Opole Voivodeship.

architecture

The single-nave church has a barrel vault with frescoes by the Jesuit Johannes Kuben from 1739–1745 depicting the veneration of the Holy Cross, the activities of the Jesuit order and some saints. In the choir, Kuben painted an illusionistic altar with a representation of the exaltation of the cross by the Eastern Roman Emperor Herakleios and the Patriarch of Jerusalem Zacharias in the temple there.

The thrust of the vault is held up by mighty pillars, which are decorated with Corinthian pilasters with coats of arms on the chapters. Between the pillars there are galleries resting on arcades , connected by openings in the pillars. Side altars are leaned against the sides of the pillars. The organ choir is located above the entrance between the towers. To the left of the altar niche is the pulpit with a canopy .

The entrance portal is located on the two-storey main facade with the two bell towers added in the 19th century , which are crowned with pointed square tent roofs (instead of the onion domes typical of the Baroque era ). The single-storey side façades on a high base are provided with two rows of windows, according to the division of the interior between the ground floor and the gallery. The rear facade has a curved gable. The saddle roof carries a ridge turret .
