The painting of Jorge Rando is characterized by a distortion of the shape, the use of emotive colors and the use of gestural expression and expressionist lines. His series of paintings are very extensive. Among the works created between the late sixties and early seventies, a few should be emphasized, such as the series Prostitution, Motherhood, Melancholy, Animals, Landscapes, Africa, etc.

Sacred painting occupies an important place in his work , in which he takes up essential themes of occidental art. In a series dedicated to the Passion of Christ , he mainly uses the colors magenta, green and black, but also nuances of yellow, red and blue. Christ appears humiliated in these paintings, as a suffering being who represents all of humanity.

Jorge Rando leaves most of his works unnamed so as not to anticipate any possibility of interpretation for the viewer. In addition to his work as an artist, he writes down reflections, theses and thoughts that accompany him during his work.

museum

The museum building adjoins the Mercedarian monastery. To convert part of the monastery into the museum, the work of the city of Málaga began in 2011 under the direction of the architect José González Vargas, and was completed in 2014. The harshness of Expressionist art is supposed to meet the sacredness and originality of the place. The Jorge Rando Museum is by no means limited to its exhibition function. The facility, which Rando wanted to transform itself into “the artistic living room of Malaga”, offers an extensive cultural program with film screenings, lectures, colloquiums and workshops. In addition, the museum is to house a research center dedicated to the expressionist movement.
