The Jorge Rando Museum in Málaga ( Spain ) opened in June 2014. The focus is on the exhibition and dissemination of Jorge Rando's work as well as the promotion of the expressionist and current neo-expressionist currents.

Jorge Rando

Jorge Rando is one of the most important artists in Spain. After studying in Spain, he went to Germany at the age of 20 , where his development was strongly influenced by Central European and German culture . German philosophers shaped him there as part of his philosophy studies . He currently lives and works in Málaga, his hometown, and Hamburg .

building

The museum building adjoins the Las Madres Mercedarias monastery in the Molinillo district of Málaga. The monastery itself was built to a design by the architect D. Manuel Rivera Valentín (1878) and inaugurated in 1893. The city of Málaga began converting part of the monastery into a museum in 2011 under the direction of the architect José Antonio González Vargas. In its construction, the museum combines the historical side of the backyard with the modern installation made of exposed aggregate concrete and oxidized steel. The museum was completed and opened in 2014. The hardness of Expressionist art meets the sacredness and originality of the place.

What's going on , the discussion series is devoted to current issues.

museum

In addition to its presentations, the Jorge Rando Museum, as Rando's wish, as the artistic living room of Malaga, offers an extensive cultural program with film screenings, lectures, colloquia and workshops. It is dedicated to cultural dialogue and cultural integration. In addition, the museum is to house a research center dedicated to the expressionist movement.

The museum houses a library with extensive literature on expressionist art as well as a large number of philosophically significant works. Further rooms are the inner courtyard, in which there is a mandarin tree from the time the monastery was founded, or the workshop as a place where many paintings, also by visitors, are created.

Exhibitions

Two of the four rooms present the work of Jorge Rando in a permanent exhibition that is periodically renewed. The other two rooms are used for temporary exhibitions by expressionist and neo-expressionist artists from Spain and other countries. The rooms are all illuminated by natural light.

Important exhibitions included Rando's series of works on prostitution, motherhood, the Passion cycle and Africa. Jorge Rando has also dealt with the work of Käthe Kollwitz and her person and developed his own interpretation, which was shown in the exhibition Encounter Käthe Kollwitz - Jorge Rando. At the end of 2015, Ernst Barlach will open the first major exhibition in Spain .

Visit and educational assignment

The museum offers guided tours that neither have to be booked nor require a minimum number of people. There are also discussions offered by art historians . They should be an exchange of impressions, combined with a visit to the museum.

La Sala de Estar del Arte

The museum is intended as a living room for art (“La Sala de Estar del Arte”). Throughout the year, there are series of different representations of artistic disciplines related to Expressionism.

"El color del sonido" (The color of sound) is the series dedicated to music ; “Luces y sombras” (light and shadow) deals with the film viewing and discussion, introduced by an introduction and ended with a discussion; "El Gabinet" deals with literature , theater and short stories ; The “Arte” ( art ) series looks at art discussions and art reviews and the “Lo que está pasando” (What's going on) series, organized by the UNESCO Chair for Communication at the University of Málaga, is devoted to debating thematic issues.

organization

The direction, administration and all activities of the museum, such as exhibitions, discussions about art , workshops, seminars etc. are organized by the Jorge Rando Foundation.
