Life

Holy Cross Church in Brzeg

Johannes Kuben joined the Jesuit order in 1719 and spent the novitiate in the Brno Jesuit college. 1722–1728 he studied philosophy and theology at the Jesuit College in Olomouc . In 1727 he was ordained a priest in Olomouc . In Olomouc he met the Moravian painter Johann Christoph Handke and his monumental baroque painting.

From 1728 Johannes Kuben was commissioned to paint churches and institutions belonging to the order. He created great works for the Leopoldina in Breslau , where Johann Christoph Handke painted the ceiling of the auditorium at the same time.

From 1733 Johannes Kuben spent four years doing paintings in the St. Klemens Church in Odolena Voda during the summer months , which was built in 1733/35 based on a design by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer . During the winter months he was installed as a preacher at the Eligius Chapel in Prague and taught mathematics at the Clementinum .

From 1739/40 he stayed mostly in Brieg for more than five years , where he also worked as a preacher. For the Jesuit Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built in 1734/39, he designed the interior in the style of quadrature painting, with the choir space being closed off by an illusionistic altar depicting the Exaltation of the Cross.

From 1757 he is said to have lived in Opole. In any case, he died there in 1770.
