The wayside shrine in Koehler

The crucifixion shrine is a torture in the Volkach district of Köhler in Lower Franconia. It was built as a so-called monolith shrine in the course of the Counter Reformation .

history

The so-called monolithic wayside shrines shaped the region around Schweinfurt during the Counter Reformation . The Würzburg prince-bishops promoted the erection of these religious monuments throughout the diocese. The reason for this was, among other things, the spread of Lutheran teaching and the turning away from the old faith by the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The Köhler wayside shrine was created by a stone mason who worked several of these tortures between Volkach and Schweinfurt between 1602 and 1610 . It was the master MO , which can be traced back to a stonemason's mark on the stick. It was created in 1605 and was therefore created under the government of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . In 1876 the wayside shrine was renovated. It was also renewed in 1924.

description

The monolithic wayside shrines all have a similar appearance. The rectangular, massive columns merge into a block-like headboard. Each was made from a single stone. The base has a square base, which is often heavily bevelled in the upper area. Most of the sticks are decorated with coats of arms . In a large majority the depictions of crucifixion scenes predominate in the essay.

The crucifixion is also depicted on the Köhler wayside shrine. In the slightly profiled transition to the shaft, the year 1605 can be seen in a cartouche on the front, with Julius Echter's coat of arms underneath. The wayside shrine ends in a massive cross, it was not decorated at the back, it bears two monograms on the left and right, "JM / AM" on the left and "CM / SM" on the right. In the shaft there are the inscriptions “G. KLOPE / 1876 renov. 1924 / Franz Höhn. "
