Kreuzkapelle in Lützenkirchen

history

The first chapel mentioned in a document was built in 1674 by Hofrat Hubert Daniels, the "Dinger" ( judge ) of the Miselohe office , and his wife Elisabeth, née de Berghes. It was consecrated in 1714 by the abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Altenberg , Johann Henning, on behalf of the Cologne auxiliary bishop Johann Werner von Veyder . On the days of the Lützenkirchen Regional Court, an "early mass" was celebrated in the Kreuzkapelle. The owner of the Lehner Mühle was obliged to make contributions to an endowment fund, from which the priest (the Primissarius , " early knife ") who held these services was paid. The abbots of Altenberg celebrated the finding of the cross (May 3rd) and the exaltation of the cross (September 14th) there at the main festivals , and until 1962 the pastors of Lützenkirchen did this regularly during the fasting and Easter period.

In June 1968 the chapel was demolished to enable the widening of Lützenkirchener Straße. It was rebuilt true to the original by 1970, offset by around 60 meters to the rear.

Furnishing

The chapel's furnishings include several colorful passion scenes made of wood with the motifs " Mount of Olives ", " Flagellation of Jesus", "Crowning of Thorns", "Carrying the Cross" and " Calvary ". They are likely to have originated in the Baroque period, but nothing is known about their origin, donors and artists.
