History and architecture

A previous chapel in late Gothic style was first mentioned in a document in 1503. Attached to it was a hermitage and later the municipal poorhouse Heilig Kreuz. The green area on which the chapel stands is enclosed with a wall made of natural stone, the Way of the Cross from around 1910 is painted on metal plates. Old trees and benches complete the facility. The current baroque hall was built in 1737 according to a designation, it stands in the middle of a former cemetery. The three-sided, plastered building with arched openings is structured by flat pilasters. The wooden barrel vault rests over a profile cornice. The barrel is decorated with octagonal paintings by the church painter Friedrich Adolf Ruegenberg, the pictures show the Passion. The building is crowned with a roof turret, in which two small bronze bells hang, they are operated by an electric automatic bell.

Furnishing

The rococo furnishings are largely uniform.

  • The three altars were consecrated together with the chapel in 1753. The main altar is probably a work by Johann Theodor Düringer. The founder was Johann Peter Nölle, a cathedral priest in Speyer. The wooden retable is two-story and shows wooden figures. The excerpt shows the crucifixion scene under a canopy, this type of altar is unusual for Westphalia. The side altars, the work of Johann Nikolaus Düringer, are decorated with columned tabs. In the middle niche of the north side altar there is an almost life-size carved Pietà from around 1480. The frame is adapted to the colors of the altar. The Agatha Altar was completed in 1749.
  • On the west gallery is a small organ prospect with the inscription 1756.
  • Among the baroque figures is a carved figure of Christ as a doctor from the 17th century.
  • The figure of St. Martinus is worth mentioning.
