The Way of the Cross in the Bavarian municipality of Thundorf in Lower Franconia in the Bad Kissingen district is one of the Thundorf architectural monuments and is registered in the Bavarian list of monuments under the number D-6-72-157-55 .

history

The Way of the Cross was built in 1851 by the sculptor Michael Arnold , who was working as a "drawing teacher" in Münnerstadt at the time, on behalf of the Thundorf citizens Michael and Martin Schmitt. Arnold's fee was 750 guilders , a multiple of the annual minimum wage for elementary school teachers, which at that time was 100 guilders.

The Way of the Cross was consecrated on September 29, 1851 ( St. Michael's Day ) by Father Guardian Jakob Kieser of the Kreuzberg Monastery .

The Way of the Cross was designed in the neo-Gothic style; the stations consist of relief panels with round arches on a stepped base with inscription. Since the stations of the cross were made of sandstone , the way of the cross was placed in a kind of cloister next to the cemetery wall to protect it from weathering.

The boy depicted in the 5th station (" Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross ") is fully sculpted with his free-standing legs, which is a technical challenge when making reliefs. Most of the time, legs are only shown semi-sculpted on reliefs. The design of the station is reminiscent of the 5th station of the Stations of the Cross in Burglauer , also made by Arnold at the same time .
