Station 1 on the old way of the cross to the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The listed Way of the Cross in the Oberfahrenberg district of the Upper Palatinate community of Waldthurn leads to the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on the Fahrenberg .

The Way of the Cross today consists of two parts, the Rosary Way created in 1956 and the old Way of the Cross from 1859.

The so-called Rosenkranzweg was built at the suggestion of Archbishop Michael Buchberger to commemorate the Marian year 1954 in place of the earlier Stations of the Cross on the Fahrenberg. The Way of the Cross was inaugurated on October 13, 1956 by the aforementioned bishop. It consists of three chapels, fourteen statues, a crucifixion group and finally the Trinity Chapel . The design for the chapels and the panels in the statues comes from the Landbauamt and four local artists. The chapels were donated by the diocese of Regensburg , the Brothers of Mercy and the parish of St. Josef in Weiden . The statues were donated by a large number of secular and spiritual persons and organizations.

The old way of the cross consisting of fourteen stone columns leads from the Rosenkranzweg to the Freialtar; this was created in 1858/59 and inaugurated in 1859. This way of the cross consists of fourteen stone pillars about 2 meters high, each with a top and a round-arched niche. A small wooden cross is attached to each column, in the picture niches are painted and labeled iron sheets with the stations of the cross. The Way of the Cross was renovated in 2003 at the instigation of the Waldthurn Forest Association.
