Station of the Cross in Unterlaa

The station of the cross in Unterlaa is a listed chapel or a wayside shrine or broad pillar from the late baroque period and the former second station of the cross after Maria Lanzendorf . It is located in Vienna's 10th  district of Favoriten , in the Unterlaa district , near Scheunenstrasse 2.

Construction and history

The wayside shrine was donated in 1774 by the Viennese civil spirits guild. At that time it was the second station on the Way of the Cross and Pilgrims, which led from the south of Vienna to Maria Lanzendorf. The first station - which no longer exists today - was located in what is now the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden .

When the Way of the Cross was abandoned, the Unterlaa community assumed the obligation to preserve the wayside shrine. The originally contained picture "Christ on the Mount of Olives" was later replaced by a true-to-picture mosaic. The picture and also the mosaic show as a special feature a lightning flashing from the clouds as a symbol of the dramatic event. The original image is now in the Favoriten District Museum .
