action

Led by fake monks and a self-appointed leader, eight thousand children move from Cologne to Genoa with the aim of liberating Jerusalem from the Saracens. Rudolf Wega, a 15-year-old boy from Amstelveen, experienced the Middle Ages up close when he was transported to the middle of the year 1212 by a time machine. He moves with the children, shares their lives and has to watch how they, exposed to the rigors of the weather, suffer hunger and thirst, are afflicted by diseases, and fight against wild animals and robber barons. He gets to know the bravery, the loyalty, the trust in God, but also the cruelty of the children of the Middle Ages. And he witnesses how they drag themselves on and on, despite all difficulties, driven only by one dream: the image of the White City, in which the sun never sets and eternal peace reigns.
