The War Memorial Elend is a listed war memorial in the village of Elend (Harz) in Saxony-Anhalt, which belongs to Oberharz am Brocken . The memorial commemorates the people who died in the First and Second World Wars .

It is located on the monument square in the center of a roundabout in the center of Elend.

Design and history

In the place of the present monument there was previously a swampy pond. The area was then redesigned. The establishment of the monument from a has granite existing boulder from the area of Schierke brought in and erected upright on a base of natural stones. On its north side a bronze plaque with the names of the six citizens of misery who died in the First World War was set in. The panel was created in the Fürst-Stolberg-Hütte in Ilsenburg . The area around the monument was designed as a park. Deciduous trees were planted. Spruces and bushes were added later. In addition, benches were set up and a circular path laid out. A hunter fence was also built . Two oaks have been planted on either side of the path leading directly to the monument from the north.

The war memorial was inaugurated on November 2, 1924. First there was a service, after which the participants then moved to the memorial. Pastor Großschupf gave a consecration speech, which was followed by the singing of the song I had a comrade . Afterwards the monument was handed over to the misery mayor Füllgrabe as well as closing remarks by the teacher Viebrock. The event was musically accompanied by the Harmonie choral society, led by Cantor Viebrock.

The memorial existed in this form until 1969. Then there was a redesign of the area, which was controversial in the village. The trees, bushes and fence as well as the circular path were removed. Instead, three paths now led through the green area. When planting came on the southeastern side of hawthorn and north of a rosary. In addition, a total of two flower bowls were placed on the other sides. The boulder itself, however, remained where the old plaque was removed and replaced with a new one that conformed to the official political orientation of the GDR . Their inscription read:

THE DEAD MONEY - PROTECT THE PEACE

Voluntary hours of work for the national structure were used for the redesign . In the course of the work, the area received four street lamps again.

After the end of the GDR, the community worker rediscovered the old plaque in the archive of the Elender town hall in 1992. The condition was impaired, however, as it had been used as a tool for mixing concrete . On the initiative of Rolf Reulecke, the board was restored by Dieter Weber from Wernigerode and finally put back in place in 1994. A second plaque was mounted underneath, on which twelve fallen misery in World War II, including a woman, are commemorated by name.

In 2001, the square was redesigned into a roundabout, in the middle of which there is now a new park. The two oaks originally planted were preserved. In the 2010s, however, the right oak had to be removed. Currently (as of 2020) the left oak is still there.

In local monument directory the war memorial is below the detection number 094 25311 as a small monument listed.
