location

The war memorial stood in the street Alt Ottersleben on a square-like extension. Schmiedestrasse joins Alt Ottersleben directly at the monument site. The preserved base is now part of the Alt Ottersleben 20–22, 46, 47 monument area .

Design and history

The memorial was erected in 1874 by the communities of Groß Ottersleben and Benneckenbeck to commemorate those who fell from the two villages in the German-Danish War of 1864 , the German War of 1866 and the Franco-German War of 1870/71 .

It was cast in iron and stood on a profiled sandstone base . It may have been poured in Tangerhütte . At the bottom of the monument, four panels were joined together like a cube; they bore the names of the fallen and the places of the fighting. Stylized cannon barrels formed the corners. The cube tapered towards the top and ended in a somewhat conical , three-meter-high column. An eagle with outspread wings was enthroned on the pillar.

The monument was surrounded by an iron grille. On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of Otter's life in 1937, it was renovated. The monument, which is heavily covered with rust , was sandblasted and preserved, the decorative grilles were removed.

A storm in the late 1960s knocked over a neighboring linden tree and also destroyed the monument. The cast iron parts were stolen; their whereabouts are unknown.

After the political turning point in 1989 , the base that had been preserved and stood on a three-step pedestal above the level of the square was opened on the initiative of the Bürger für Ottersleben e. V renovated and a sign explaining the history was placed on the base.
