Life

From 1954 to 1989, Hellmut Bilz was director of the toy museum in Seiffen in the Ore Mountains , which was newly founded after the Second World War , and which at that time took over the part of the old toy collections held by Johannes Eichhorn , the chairman of the Seiffen local group of the GDR cultural association and local representative for the preservation of monuments. Bilz was responsible for creating “a mass-effective center documenting the latest research and museology, which historically accurately depicts Seiffen production in old and new times and works closely with socialist industry and craft.” He succeeded . He increased the museum's holdings to over 12,000 exhibits, which were viewed by around 275,000 visitors each year. In addition, from 1974 onwards he tried to build the newly created open-air museum in Seiffen.

As a student of Paul Nedo , he graduated from the Humboldt University in Berlin with a degree in ethnography. In Wolfgang Jacobeit as thesis advisor, he was in 1986 with a study of the technology and the history of the tire turning to Dr. phil. PhD . In addition, as a member of the SED, he was also active in cultural policy in close cooperation with the Kulturbund of the GDR, the council of the Seiffen community and the council of the Marienberg district . For Manfred Bachmann , Hellmut Bilz was “a highlight of the museum system in the GDR”.
