War memorial

The war memorial on the corner of Badstrasse and Dr.-Rudolf-Friedrichs-Strasse in the Saxon town of Radeberg commemorates the founding of the German Empire in 1871 and the victims of the German War of 1866 from Radeberg and the fallen of the Franco-German War in 1870/71. The memorial was first unveiled in 1879 and is a listed building.

history

War memorial at the new location from 1902. Old postcard

The memorial was financed by donations from the residents of Radeberg and the surrounding area, which were collected during various collections. Since the Radeberg city councils could not agree on a location in the city, the monument was erected outside the city on the boundary of the then independent municipality of Lotzdorf . The ceremonial unveiling took place on September 7, 1879. At the beginning of the 20th century, Badstrasse in Radeberg was expanded considerably. Since the monument stood in the way of this expansion, it was moved about 50 meters to the north-north-west in 1902, placed on a new, considerably higher granite base at its current location and consecrated again on November 9, 1902. The new memorial complex consisted of a previously park-like triangle at the junction of Badstrasse and the former Friedrichstrasse. The park around the monument was redesigned and reduced in size as a simple green area around 1992 as part of further road construction measures. A weathered inscription on the base of the memorial testifies to the implementation of the monument.

The war memorial was partially restored in the early 2000s.

execution

The 2.20 meter long and 2.08 meter wide substructure sits on an almost square, multi-tiered, approximately 60 cm high base made of Lusatian granite . This is crowned at the corners by a cannon ball with a diameter of 12 cm. The sandstone shaft rests on the substructure and is inscribed on all four sides. Above it is an image of a Saxon equestrian helmet with jewelry elements. The total height is approx. 6 meters (after implementation). The Saxon and German coats of arms are depicted with laurel rice on the shaft cover . These coats of arms were made by the former Radeberger Eisenwerk "Saxonia". An infantry side gun, a saber and two crossed cannon barrels are shown under the rider's helmet. Oak leaves and laurel rice adorn the helmet. Design and execution (except cast iron) come from the Dresden sculptors Wernitzsch and Fröde.

"In memory / of the resurrection of the / German Empire / 1870–71 / and in memory / of the victims of the campaigns / 1866 a. 1870–71. "

The back of the monument bears the inscription:

“Erected from / voluntary contributions / the residents of Radeberg / and its surroundings. / Unveiled / on Sept. 7th 1879 / under the glorious government / Sr. Maj. Of King Albert / of Saxony "

The names of the Radeberg victims of the wars are listed on the sides.

An inscription on the back of the base attests to the relocation of the monument in 1902 and the subsequent rededication:

"Moved 12 m to / NNW in 1902 and re-consecrated on November 9th"
