Criminal case Greta
The death of a three-year-old girl from the city of Viersen on May 4, 2020 and its circumstances is referred to as the criminal case Greta . The public prosecutor's office is investigating a 25-year-old educator on suspicion of murder .
Course of events
In a daycare center in Viersen, Lower Rhine, the employees called the emergency doctor on April 21, 2020 because they found a girl had severe breathing problems. The firefighters who had arrived earlier resuscitated the girl, and the emergency doctor later determined that she had stopped breathing . At the time of the onset of the crisis, the girl was the only child in the group cared for by two employees, as only emergency care was available due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The child was then admitted to hospital, where it died on May 4, 2020.
Investigations
In the children's clinic, doctors found petechial bleeding on the eyes and face. On April 29, a doctor told the police that he could not explain the child's condition. The next day, a homicide squad took over the investigation.
After the girl's death on May 4, an autopsy was arranged, which revealed that the girl had died from outside influences. Severe brain damage from lack of oxygen was found.
On May 20, a 25-year-old teacher was in custody taken. The public prosecutor's office in Mönchengladbach accuses her of murder with the trait of maliciousness in the girl.
In the course of the investigation, other similar cases became known, for example a child in a day care center in Tönisvorst also suffered respiratory arrest when the suspect was present, but survived. In this case, the suspect is investigated for mistreating those under protection . Other similar incidents at the suspects' former workplaces in day-care centers in Krefeld and Kempen are also being investigated.

The victim is a girl named Greta who died of the injuries one day after her third birthday.
