Kristen Michal (born July 12, 1975 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician. From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016, he was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas Minister of Economic Infrastructure of the Republic of Estonia .

Life and politics

Kristen Michal graduated from Tallinn High School in 1993. From 1994 to 1999 he studied social science and administrative management at the Tallinn Pedagogical University (now Tallinn University). Michal left university without a degree. From 2006 to 2009 he studied law at the private university Akadeemia Nord , where he completed his bachelor's degree .

Michal got involved in Estonian politics at an early age. In 1996 he joined the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Eesti Reformierakond ). From 1996 to 1999 Michal was the reform party advisor on the Tallinn City Council. From 1999 to 2001 Michal was a speaker for the parliamentary group in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). In 2001/2002 he was the office manager of the Estonian regional minister Toivo Asmer . He was also a member of Tallinn City Council.

In 2002 Michal was Prime Minister Siim Kallas' domestic policy advisor . In 2002/2003 Michal held the office of district mayor of the Tallinn district of Kesklinn ("Tallinn city center").

In 2003 Michal became General Secretary of the Estonian Reform Party. From 2004 to 2007 Michal was a member of the Estonian Parliament. He was re-elected in 2007, but gave up his mandate in the same year in order to be able to concentrate fully on the tasks of the General Secretary of the Reform Party.

From April 2011 to December 2012 Michal was Justice Minister of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip (Reform Party).

On July 30, 2012, the public prosecutor launched a corruption case against Michal and his fellow party member, former party secretary Kalev Lillo . Specifically, it was about anonymous party donations. In November 2012, the proceedings against Michal were dropped. Nevertheless, Michal resigned from his position in December 2012.

From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016, Kristen Michal was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõiva's Minister of Economic Infrastructure. He then returned as a member of the Estonian Parliament.

Private life

Kristen Michal lives in a illegitimate partnership. He has two sons.
