Kristine Stiles (* 1947 ) is an American art historian , artist, and professor of art and art history at Duke University .

life and work

Stiles studied art history at the University of California, Berkeley , and obtained his doctorate in 1987 with Peter Selz on the subject: The Destruction in Art Symposium (DIAS) . In 2006 she became a full professor at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Her research and teaching focus is on modern and contemporary art, feminist art , art theory and criticism, as well as trauma studies . In particular, she has made an international name for herself through numerous contributions to performances , action art , gender roles and feminist art as well as Fluxus .

The work Theories and documents of contemporary art, published together with Peter Selz in 1996 . A sourcebook of artists' writings is still considered a standard work on the art history of the contemporary avant-garde.
