Kristus Konungen

The parish Kristus Konungen ( "Christ the King") is the oldest of three Catholic parishes in Gothenburg . Their first church, St. Josef, was the second Catholic church consecrated in Sweden after the Reformation, after St. Eugenia . Today's Christ the King's Church was built in 1937/38.

history

The parish was founded in 1862. At first there were fifty believers. Three years later you could inaugurate your own church St. Josef, a small house of God in neo-Gothic style.

As the congregation grew, parish land was purchased in the Heden district in 1928 in order to build a new, larger church, school and parsonage. On October 31, 1937 the foundation stone was laid for the church, whose patronage Christ the King has now also become the name of the parish. The last Sunday mass was celebrated in St. Joseph on September 25, 1938, and the first in Christ the King on October 2, 1938. The parish had grown to 500 people. In 1961 there were nearly three thousand. At the end of the 1990s the parish had more than seven thousand believers of different nationalities.

organ

The organ was built in 1907 by the organ builder JW Walker & Sons Ltd. built. The instrument was in the First Church of Christ Scientists on Sloane Terrace (Chelsea, London) until 2004; When the church was converted into a concert hall in 2004, the Christ the King Congregation in Gothenburg bought the instrument and had it restored by Tore Johansson, the organ builder Tostared. It was inaugurated in Christ the King's Church in January 2010. The organ has 51 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The actions are electric.
