The Association for German Dogs recognized the breed at national level in 2014, it is looked after by the German Greyhound Breeding and Racing Association ( DWZRV ).

Origin and history

Already 4000 years ago the people of Crete hunted with dogs of this type. In terms of appearance, there was previously a relationship to the greyhound-like dogs of the Mediterranean, z. B. suspected the Podencos in Spain.

Crete was occupied by the Ottomans for 230 years. During this time the population of the breed declined so much that it was on the verge of extinction. The socio-economic changes in Crete in recent decades also had a negative impact. In remote areas of the mountainous island, however, this breed was able to survive in its pure form. The first written breed standard was created in 1994, and special breed shows have been held regularly on Crete ever since . The Kritos Lagonikos is considered the national dog of Crete, but is still very rare.

The breed has been recognized at national level by the Greek Cynological Association (KOE, member of the FCI) since 2003, and international recognition by the FCI is currently being worked on. The Kritos Lagonikos is one of the archetypal dogs for hunting (FCI Group 5, Section 7).

description

50 to 60 centimeters tall and up to 30 kilograms heavier, slender, but also muscular dog with a short, smooth coat that can have many colors. The head is elongated and wedge-shaped with almond-shaped eyes and well-pigmented eyelid rims. The medium-sized triangular ears are extremely mobile and stand upright. The tail is carried curled over the back, when full and in the relaxed state it is stretched. The elegant, springy trot is characteristic of the run, as is the jumping canter. As a hunter, he is agile, fast and persistent, with lightning-fast reactions he follows the tracked game. He hunts with all his senses, pursues the hare's freshest trail without a trace. In the sprint, it reaches speeds of 60 to 70 km / h even on uneven terrain.

use

Nowadays, the Kritos Lagonikos is mainly used for hare hunting, but also, as in earlier times, for herding cattle and as a guard dog. He hunts with his nose and eyes, always staying in contact with the person leading him and reacting to acoustic and optical signals even over great distances.

Essence

The Cretan dog is bright, intelligent and friendly. He is quick to grasp, is highly instinctive, social and communicative. In the house he is calm, sensitive and people-oriented, but reserved towards strangers. When hunting, however, he is full of vigor, daring and perseverance.

health

Due to the living conditions: on your own in summer, rough conditions in the mountains, it has retained its natural robustness. In the past, dogs were only brought to the house during the hunting season. In addition, they are extremely late in maturity and are only considered to be adults when they are around 4 years old. Heat usually occurs at 18 months of age, usually only once a year.
