The Krn (Italian Monte Nero ) (2,244 m) is a mountain in the Julian Alps in Slovenia .
The Krn was in the Isonzo battles (June 1915 to November 1917) of the First World War (1914–1918) an important base of the Italian army. The Austrian defenders were thrown back by an attack by the Exilles alpine battalion on the Krn summit on June 16, 1915. Despite repeated efforts, the Austrian companies were unable to recapture the summit. The new front line now ran from Krnska skrbina to Batognica . The Krn summit has now been strongly fortified and expanded with numerous caverns and positions.
After the twelfth battle of the Isonzo had begun, the Italian summit garrison was simply ignored by the Austrian and German soldiers charging forward and thus isolated from the valley position. After three days, the Austrian and German troops had long since crossed the border, the remaining Alpini units surrendered, destroying the documents and important apparatus, and marched into captivity. Some of the prisoners were even brought as far as Germany. Heavy shelling by the Italian and Austrian artillery destroyed the summit of the Krn. That's why it's a little lower today. Extensive exhibition on this in the museum in Karfreit (slow: Kobarid / Italian: Caporetto).
